In the course of this presidential election cycle I have given two public addresses to Catholics on responsible voting. Given the tenor of the presidential campaigns, I was not surprised to hear many people say, “I don’t know who to vote for,” or “I don’t think I’ll vote at all.”

In every presidential election year since 1976, the bishops of the United States have published a statement reminding Catholics of their political responsibilities. The current statement of the bishops on this subject is entitled Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (FCFC). Beginning with this column, I would like to present and comment on this important document as we prepare to vote in November.

Our observance of Labor Day moves us as Catholics to reflect on the meaning of human labor in light of Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church. How are we to understand the role of work in our lives? Does work actually help to fulfill our role as cooperators with God in perfecting creation — or is work little more than necessary drudgery?

We are well aware of the Second Vatican Council’s restoration of the diaconate as a permanent order in the Church. What we might not be nearly as aware of is the same council’s restoration of the ancient sacramental of Consecration to a Life of Virginity for Women Living in the World.

What a glorious time this is! On June 11, I ordained 14 men to the Permanent Diaconate; and on June 18 I will ordain two men to the Priesthood. God has indeed blessed us with this extraordinary number of men who will serve the Church as ordained ministers well into the future.
